Is Teen Rhinoplasty on the Rise?
With the increasing popularity of plastic surgery in Beverly Hills and across the country, it should come as no surprise that there’s a correlating increase in cosmetic procedures among teenagers in recent years. Of these, rhinoplasty, or getting a nose job, is the most popular, accounting for 45 percent of all cosmetic procedures performed on teens. What are the reasons for rhinoplasty in teenagers at all, and why are cosmetic surgeons performing it so often?
Adult Growth
The majority of cosmetic surgery procedures shouldn’t be performed on muscles and skin that are still growing, because that would make the final results far too unpredictable. The nose, however, reaches full maturity at a younger age compared to the rest of the body. In boys, the adult size of the nose is reached by around age 16 or 17, while in girls the adult nose size finalizes around age 15 or 16. This makes rhinoplasty available for much younger patients compared to the majority of cosmetic procedures.
And let’s not forget, the teenage years are some of the most difficult when it comes to physical appearance. Dealing with a nose that’s disproportionate to your face can result in bullying and teasing that could leave psychological scars behind long after high school graduation. Teen rhinoplasty is one way that kids can feel better about themselves and improve their self-esteem.
Teenage rhinoplasty has seen a steady increase over the last few years. Whether the trend will continue is hard to say. However, as long as kids continue giving each other a hard time about their appearances, it’s a good bet that teen rhinoplasty trends are going to keep right on increasing.
